Position Description
This is an important role which demands someone who can comprehend the issues involved in managing a large hardware plant. The work will involve liaising with the following:
- Managing user requests for hardware
- Liaising with external systems to cover hardware acquisition and system setup
- Ability to validate hosts match the requirements (scripting skills)
- Prioritisation of requests amongst the business users
- Attend demand driven meetings to prioritise
- Ability to respond to business unit requests for summary of demand and utilisation
- Handling business emergencies
- Ordering equipment
- Being organised - knowing exactly what is going on, who is waiting for who
- Reporting - be able to demonstrate views of the plant according to BU requests (e.g. by department, by type, by state, by data center)
- Capacity planning / management
* business owners
* IT application development groups
* infrastructure
* production management
to ensure management of the supply/demand for new hardware.
Given the scale of the plant the person will ideally have the ability to build a system to manage the amount of inflight requests, along with providing solutions to end users so they can query their inventory at any one time.
The ideal candidate would have software development skills - typically scripting (Perl / CGI preferred) or other relevant technology which will allow tools to be built to manage the data, and provide an interface to let users see and modify their requests and plant status.
Skills Required
Unix / Linux - understanding of operating systems
- Unix/Linux - understanding of basic storage concepts
- Unix Linux - understanding of basic database concepts/terms
- Understanding of capacity and utilisation, e.g. how to measure them
- Scripting - ability to audit the plant for conformance and exceptions
- Well organized and detail orientated
