Amid the worst job market in 25 years, IT is holding steady. Most CIOs are maintaining their current staffing levels; while a few are hiring specialists who have in-demand IT skills.

Overall, companies are so dependent on IT that they can't lay off the people who keep their data center operations humming, and they're loath to let go of the developers who are working on next-generation Internet applications.

"IT remains a real safe and interesting and high-paying place to be," says David Foote, CEO of Foote Partners, which conducts quarterly assessments of IT pay trends in the United States. "The world has embraced IT…because it enables companies to deliver cheaper and better products. I'm pretty bullish on IT."

Data center design: one of your best IT career choices

Foote says what's unique about this downturn is that IT departments are hiring talent in certain areas – such as business process modeling and project management – while laying off in others connected to weak product lines.

"IT is counter-trending a lot of what's happening in the general economy," Foote says.

Here's our list a list of 10 tech skills that are still in demand:

1. Business Process Modeling

Business process management, methodology and modeling is one of the few IT niches that saw pay gains in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the quarterly IT salary survey compiled by Foote Partners. In particular, companies were willing to pay for workers with ITIL IT best practices and CobiT IT governance experience. Pay for these skills was up 10.3% from a year ago and 5.6% from the previous quarter, the Foote report says.

Kevin Faughnan, director of IBM's Academic Initiative, says business process modeling is one of the key skills that business majors should be studying. "It's about how does our business work, what are the business processes and how do we analyze them," Faughnan says, adding that this is a key issue for companies to consider before applying IT to solve business problems

2. Database

Database expertise is another area where pay is on the rise, up 2.9% in the last quarter, the Foote report says. Companies are looking for IT workers with experience in Microsoft SQL Server and the Oracle Developer Suite. They're also willing to pay for workers with database certifications such as the Oracle DBA Administrator Certified Master and the Teradata Certified Master, Certified Application Developer and Certified Design Architect, the Foote report says.

Similarly, a 2008 CIO survey conducted by the Society for Information Management listed database skills as among the top skills for entry-level employees. Experience with databases was one of only four technical skills listed by CIOs, who favored soft skills such as collaboration, problem solving and communication in hiring recent college graduates.

3. Messaging/Communications

Messaging and communications is the only other skill set that experienced a pay raise in the fourth quarter of 2008. Pay rose 2.8%, the Foote report says. Companies are particularly interested in hiring employees with experience in unified communications and messaging systems, which was among the highest paying IT skills in the Foote report. A related skill that also ranked among the highest paying was VoIP and IP telephony.

4. IT architecture

CIOs are paying less for IT certifications than they did three years ago, but there are a few exceptions to this rule. One of them is IT architecture, which has seen a 10% rise in the value of certifications during the past year, the Foote report says.

Foote says companies are looking to hire enterprise architects as well as system, network, application, data, information and security architects. Among the certifications rising in value are EMC Proven Professional Technology Architect, Security Certified Network Architects, Microsoft Certified Architects, SNIA Certified Architects, and the Open Group's IT Certified Architect.

5. IT security

A slew of security certifications – including the CompTIA Security+, GIAC Security Essentials, Certified Ethical Hacker, GIAC Certified Incident Handler and Check Point Certified Security Administrator-- have increased in value in the past three months, according to the Foote report.

Demand for security specialists is likely to remain strong because few teens are entering the field. Professor Peter Lee, head of the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, sees a shortage in students studying security-related topics "We've seen a decline in interest in students who want to study security related to hardware architecture, operating systems and networks," Lee says.

"The value of security skills is going up, and jobs are pretty stable," Foote says, adding that many federal jobs are available for information security specialists with government security clearances

6. Project management

The Project Management Professional certification remains in demand, the Foote report says. Even more important is experience managing complex IT projects and delivering results on time and on or under budget.

SIM's 2008 CIO survey listed project leadership as one of the top 10 skills needed for mid-level employees. Project planning, including budgeting and scheduling, was also cited as well as project integration and management.

"Project management skills are going to be more important over the next few years," says Henry Eckstein, senior vice president of strategic technology at York Insurance Services Group. Eckstein oversees a 50-person IT shop. "We have set up a corporate project management office. We are working on changing the corporate culture to do more project management and more IT governance."

7. Data mining

Jobs are plentiful for workers who understand data mining and related fields such as information on demand, content management and unstructured information management, experts say.

"The world revolves around data. Anything you can do to develop data analysis, data mining and information on demand skills is incredibly critical," IBM's Faughnan says.

"There's a broad range of issues involved with managing very large amounts of data and being able to process it and extract knowledge from that data," CMU's Lee says. "One of the things we are starting to see from leading-edge places like Google is the need for graduates with the understanding and skill to cope in the new world of data intensive computing."

8. Web development

Demand for employees with Web development certifications has plummeted in the past year, with the value for certifications in this area dropping 21.8% according to the Foote report. However, experts say there is still a need for developers who understand the latest Web trends, especially social media.

"You've got to learn to manipulate data on the Web, and that includes Web 2.0. Mash-ups are becoming commonplace," IBM's Faughnan says.

SIM's CIO survey listed programming and application development skills as key for entry-level employees, too. It was the highest ranked of the technical skills listed by CIOs.

9. IT optimization

IT experts predict a solid future for IT professionals with experience in IT optimization, including virtualization and cloud computing. However, these jobs may end up in service providers, rather than IT departments.

"Through software as a service, through cloud computing, CIOs may be doing less IT in house, but somebody is still going to be doing that. There will be a demand for more computer scientists in data centers," says Josh James, Director of Research and Industry Analysis for TechAmerica.

10. Networking

Although pay for networking certifications is down over the last six months, many remain on the list of the IT certifications earning the highest pay premiums, according to the Foote report. These include certifications from Cisco, SNIA, EMC, Brocade and Avaya.

Your last-minute guide to finding a summer job

It is often very challenging for a student to find their first summer job, or for that matter, their second or fourth! The first job objection is of course that you don’t have any experience, so how do you get experience without experience.
There is an interesting shift in the tactics of students looking for work in this decade. The most obvious place to start looking it seems is with your parents. Your baby boomer parents are usually very well connected, have had several jobs over their careers or worked in many different departments of the same company for the last 30 years and have an active network. A friend of mine has done his son’s job search for him for the last 5 years, reality will set in one day but so far it has kept his student child gainfully, though remarkably underemployed for his capabilities…beats doing your own search though, apparently.
If skills are what you are lacking, look at your strengths. Consider how you attack a project or your homework or your attitude towards life. Are you eager to learn, have lots of enthusiasm, like to take risks, welcome challenge and variety? Maybe you can speak more than one language and have done babysitting or helped neighbors with yard work. Spend some time soul searching what you would like to find and what you definitely don’t want to be doing.
Before you do anything else you will want to pick up “Summer Jobs In Canada 2010“, by Sentor Media.
Author Kevin Makra says the first thing one has to do to find employment is to consider the types of jobs available to you. He says there are 5 different industries where youth with little or no work experience can often find work:

1. Hospitality

2. Office

3. General labour

4. Retail

5. Recreation

Makra says the second step is to assess the skills you have and what you can offer the job market. Get to know yourself. Honestly identify your strengths, skills, weaknesses, hobbies, what you like to do and what you dislike doing, environments you prefer like an office versus the outdoors. Ask yourself what motivates you to get up every day, aside from your mother; what kind of magazines do you read and what topics of films and books do you like.

If you have to use an application form, ask for two copies, one to write out for practice, in pencil, and one as the final application, in pen. The trickiest question on an application form is the salary. Print OPEN.
If you can’t find a summer job consider volunteering in an area of your interest and skill level. You might even look for an internship which could lead to paid work.
One of the biggest down falls of job applicants if applying to jobs that you think, “I could do this job.” If you haven’t done it and you don’t have the education or the training then chances are there are a plethora of candidates who can actually do the job because they have done it before. Now, that being said, if you can network your way into an interview for this job you may be able to land it based on that philosophy by selling yourself in the interview.
Whether you look at: golf courses, retail, law firms, the government, consumer goods, the YM and YWCA, camps, water parks, provincial and national parks, hospitality, health care facilities or your local pizzeria when you go to apply, look your best and bring your personality and enthusiasm with you. Karen (aka working girl) has had 59 jobs in all, she has been a dishwasher, teacher, waitress, envelope sorter, middle manager, model and consultant. Karen quit 58 times (she was only fired once) she is an expert in knowing when to leave for a new role. Karen shared “knowing when to quit and how to quit, are fundamental skills in managing your career.” I would whole heartedly agree with that statement, it is a skill that develops with practice. I find that many people stay in a job too long for a variety of reasons:When is the right time to quit? When is too soon, or too late? Knowing when to leave a role is one of the most important decisions that you will need to make in managing a successful career. Investing in Your Career with an MBA

Market Trends: Global Business Education on the Rise
The recent economic downturn emphasized the global interconnectivity of business today, and the need for professionals to acquire an international profile in order to become 21st century business leaders. Obtaining a global perspective is an increasingly important asset for career-focused individuals across the world.
Amidst the faltering economy, business school applications and business education investments soared in the past two years. Many business executives have taken advantage of low job security and tight financial markets to invest in their careers. However new data shows that application rates are evening out – especially in the United States and Canada. Applications for one-year Full-Time MBA programs are still on the rise, whereas two-year Full-Time, Part-Time, Executive and Distance-Learning programs are fairly constant or in decline.
Full-Time Programs
In the past few years, a surprising number of career-minded individuals opted to strengthen their resumes so as to better position themselves on the job market. The Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) stated that 2008 was the second-largest year-over-year surge in applications to full-time programs since 2002, and the highest level of increase in five years. Moreover, according to GMAC’s 2009 report on MBA application trends, 69% of one-year Full-Time MBA programs increased their application volumes this year. The application volume for two-year Full-Time programs, most of which are located in the United States, did not fluctuate from 2008 to 2009.
Séan Rickard, Director of Admissions at the Cranfield School of Management, told Access MBA that both the rate and the quality of applications to their one-year Full-Time program have improved in 2009. “Despite (or perhaps because of) the recession, we have seen not only an increase in the number of applications for our Full-time MBA this year, in particular applications from the UK and Europe which are up 60 per cent, but also an increase in the quality,” says Rickard. Out of the 25 European business schools participating in a 2010 Access MBA survey, the majority of them reported stronger academic qualifications in their 2009 Full-Time applicants than in 2008.
The economic opportunity loss of the MBA has dwindled for those individuals who have taken a paycut or have been laid off from their job due to the downturn. Individuals on the frontlines of the financial crisis (those who work in investment banking, private equity, real estate) and more junior professionals who have lost their jobs are more actively pursuing an MBA degree, and most frequently with flexible Full-Time programs.
“It is logical for business school applications to increase in a downturn since the opportunity cost, normally the biggest cost of an MBA, has reduced,” says Hult International Business School President Dr. Stephen Hodges. In March 2009 the school announced a 102% increase in applicants. Offering the brand label of an American MBA at their campuses in London, Dubai, Shang-Hai as well as in Boston, Hult International Business School has seen a surge in international applicants to their MBA programs. Dr. Hodges did not specify which of its MBA programs received the most applications; the school has one-year Full-Time programs as well as a Part-Time program in Dubai.
Part-Time Programs
Part-Time MBA programs also have experienced a slight increase of applications as they cater to individuals who wish to keep their current job while strengthening their resumes in order to better position themselves in the downturn. According to GMAC’s 2009 Application Trends Survey, the overall Part-Time program application volume rose 7%. The Council also reports, however, that nearly half of the Part-Time programs reported a decline in application rates.
Executive Programs
Meanwhile, company investments in top-level Executive MBA programs for their employees have stagnated. In this past year, GMAC reports that 51% of EMBA programs experienced declines in applications, and that the average number of applications per program declined by 25%. Facing economic uncertainty, employers have held back on sponsoring business education for their employees.
While some MBA program types, such as Full-Time programs, still boast increased application rates, GMAC explains that, “application volume—still at its highest level—appeared to level off across
degree and program types in 2009” in their latest Application Trends Survey. Although application rates were strong in 2009, these rates are hinting at a gradual decrease in two-year Full Time program interest as well as a decline in Part-Time and Executive program applications.
Helping Candidates to Choose the Right MBA Program
Regardless of whether programs are sponsored by employers or by individual students, the return on investment is high for candidates who earn their MBA at top international business schools. The latest GMAC Alumni Perspectives Survey shows that a graduate business education yields impressive returns: 80% of MBA graduates who attained a new job after graduation indicated they “could not have obtained that job without a graduate management degree.”
On the Access MBA Tour, qualified professionals are given the chance to meet with business school representatives in private One-to-One meetings and small group workshops. In addition, Access MBA advisors at the event help orient candidates towards the business schools that match their criteria. This personalized orientation and the individualized discussions with Admissions Officers differentiate Access MBA from other MBA fair organizers. “The One-to-One meetings are proven to advance candidates in their decision-making process during the event. This is more valuable than basing an MBA program choice on brochures or rankings” says Christophe Coutat, Founder of the Access MBA Tour.
“We are convinced of the value of the Access MBA 1-2-1 events as we are consistently presented with high-quality candidates who fit our programme and our recruitment goals; many more than we would normally meet at a traditional fair event and with better profiles and motivation,” says Helen Dowd, Admissions Director at Manchester Business School. The school, ranked in the top 20 worldwide, participates in the Access MBA Tour year upon year.

Easy ways to make yourself look really unprofessional

For example, always turn off your cell phone during a job interview. Not just for the sake of being polite, but also if you are someone who enjoys eclectic ringtones, an interview is not the time to show them off.We’ve all heard the old adage “Looking for work is work”. When applying for jobs it’s important to remain a consummate professional. There is a certain job search etiquette and appropriate behaviour that needs adhering to. How you present yourself could either impress or put off future employers.
Having “Bow-chicka-bow-bow” ring out from your phone while trying to impress a future employer is not only embarrassing, but may give the interviewer a sordid impression of how you spend your time out of the office.
You never want to open the door to the question: What does your ringtone say about you?
From answering your phone, to the message you leave, it is important to be aware of how you are representing yourself.
You only need to make this mistake once to learn your lesson. It happened to me when I was applying for a summer student placement position. I was lying in bed one morning when the phone rang. I picked up the receiver and the conversation went something like this:

“Hello” I said.“Hello, is this Jenna?”“Yes, oh my god, hi how are you?” I enthusiastically responded.“Um, I’m good, thank you”“Oh my god, where are you, what time is it where you are?”“Um, it’s 9:30″“What, what do you mean?”“Um, that it’s 9:30…”“Wait, you’re here!?! No, where are you?”“I’m in Toronto”“What? I can’t believe you’re here. What are you doing here? When can we meet up?”“Jenna, I’m phoning about the application you submitted for the summer student position. I’m wondering if you’d like to come in for an interview.”There was a long pause.“Hello? Jenna?”Embarrassing, yes, but at least it was only a friend for whom I had mistaken the caller. In hindsight it could have been worse.
That was all it took to realize that when searching for work it is important to always be ready to receive a call.
Here are a few more job search etiquette tips:
Have a professional sounding voice mail message. No jokes or celebrity impersonations, please. (I once heard a very poor Yoda impression telling me that, “Patient, you must be. A message you must leave.”)
Don’t apply for jobs with an email address that reflects your hobby, your entire family or your sexual prowess. (golfmaniac@email.com, TheHendersons@email.com, or Ladiesman69@email.com) Create one that’s just your name, or as close as possible. JohnSmith500@email.com is fine.
It’s fine to have a sense of humour, but you have to be aware that not everyone is going to share it. If you misjudge your audience before you get to know them (or they get to know you), you stand a high chance of looking unprofessional or immature.
Find a job where you can be yourself. On the job hunt, however, it’s better to be the polite, respectful version of yourself that you send to dinner with your significant other’s parents.

During the entire job hunting process, the most significant and tricky stage is the interview. Candidates feel anxious and nervous before and during the interview process and cannot rest unless they have heard back from the company. For some this phone call brings a sense of achievement with the news that they have been selected for the job, but many receive no calls at all conveying that they have failed to land the job. There might be many reasons why a candidate fails to get the job, most of which are related to the interview process. Many candidates are under the impression that they did well in the interview and are devastated when they are rejected. The fact is that most of the candidates have no idea that during the interview session they might have committed some grave mistakes which cost them the job. These mistakes are so common that most of the candidates repeat them over and over again without realizing the damage they are doing to their career. If you think you are one of those candidates, there is no need to panic as we have identified some of the most common mistakes made by candidates during an interview so that you can avoid them in the future.

Being Late

A lot of candidates fail to appear for the interview on time and think that they can get away with a lame excuse. If you are filing to arrive at the job interview on time, it gives the interviewer an impression that you are not taking the job opportunity seriously and hence is not someone they were looking for. So to make a good impression during the interview you should be there on time. If you fail to do that apologize for the delay and reassure the interviewer that this is not a habitual practice.

Dressing Inappropriately

Dressing right is the most important part of an interview. Assuming that a casual dress might do for your interview is a big mistake. If you have any doubts you can do a little research regarding the company culture and find out what kind of dressing is expected. Nevertheless it is better to be overdressed rather than being underdressed. Also, try to keep the accessories to a minimum so that you look professional.

Being Unprepared

Some candidates show up for an interview without even the slightest preparation and as a result fail to answer any tough questions asked by the interviewer. Not researching about the company you are applying to can also be fatal for the interview. Make sure that when you are appearing for an interview you know what kind of work entails the job that you have applied for and you have a general idea of the company’s background.

Talking Too Much Or Too Little

Talking too much or saying next to nothing is also a mistake we have seen during an interview. You should answer a question completely and then let the interviewer proceed to his next one. Blabbering uselessly and interrupting the interviewer creates a bad impression. Similarly, answering the questions in monosyllables and nor elaborating on anything also leaves the interviewer dissatisfied, thus minimizing your chances of getting a job. It is also important to ask important and well thought questions related to the job. Asking silly questions or not asking any questions at all is not the right approach also.

Badmouthing Your Employer

Nothing raises the red flags more than badmouthing your former employer in front of the interviewer as it points towards a lack of professional maturity and failure to take responsibility. Trying to justify your reasons for leaving the previous employer by criticizing him is a bad idea and should be avoided at all costs. Even if your boss actually was a horrible person, there is no need to share that with the interviewer. Keep your reasons for leaving the last job and your views about your previous boss professional.

Lying

You should never lie during an interview or provide false information on your resume. If you are qualified and skilled enough for the position you have applied for, you will get the job. If however you feel like you are not qualified for the job then you should not apply in the first place, no matter how desperately you want the job. Lying in the interview certainly diminishes your chances of getting the job. Be open about your weaknesses and strong points. When you state you weaknesses make sure that you also point out what steps you have taken to address the particular weakness and how far have you succeeded in the effort.

Lacking Enthusiasm

Appearing disinterested and bored during the interview is one of the most fatal mistakes that can ruin your chances of getting selected for the job. Show the employer that you care about the job and are excited at the prospect of joining the company. If the interviewer senses that you are not interested in the job, he will not call you for a second interview.

Asking About Benefits Too Soon

Bringing in the salary questions too soon and repeatedly raises the red flags as the interviewer senses that you are not very interested in the job as much as the benefits and the money involved in it. You should wait for the interviewer to bring up the salary negotiations as he will definitely ask you about the expected salary range before the interview session comes to an end.

It’s always good to take a little break from work and analyze your work/life situation in a relaxed environment. This helps me prioritize what’s important both at work and in my personal life. Living a fast paced life and meeting deadlines all the time hampers my thinking process, and to get new ideas and aspirations, taking a back seat in life once or twice a year does really help my cause.

Q. 9. Do you believe that Pakistani universities are creating an effective talent pool and what is your company’s strategy to attract the best talent in Pakistan?

Mr. Faisal Bhatti: Unfortunately, the gap between practical on the ground status and the expectations of fresh graduates is huge and is widening every year. There is a critical need for industry professionals to interact with college graduates to balance their idealism with a pinch of realism. Professional mentoring should start as early as A-Levels or FSc; after all, students and their families amongst a vast majority of Pakistanis have selected a particular industry by then. Professionals will be able to give a very practical picture which will assist the young generation in an objective evaluation process.
It can be quite traumatic for a young graduate, full of enthusiasm and ideals, to face the real world at times. Lack of guidance and career counseling at schools and universities leave him unprepared to the amount of sheer hard work and persistence required in a competitive job.
I have seen a lot of confusion amongst IT graduates. They go for a career in IT simply because that was the ‘in’ thing to do at that time. They realize too late that career selection should be based, first and foremost, on your passions in life; you spend an extreme amount of time at work and it is all heading for disaster if you do not have an insatiable passion for your work or industry.
To attract the best talent, we attend different career fairs at all universities and hire the students before they graduate. We work closely with career service offices at most of the universities in Pakistan and try to minimize the gap between academia and the professional world out there. We at Techlogix don’t focus only on grades when we hire individuals. We try to understand the main reasons why an individual has chosen IT as a career. There is technical as well as personality assessment and only those individuals are selected who perform well in both.

Q. 10. What is your formula of success in life?

Mr. Faisal Bhatti: Success is different for different people. For some it is going up the ladder, for others it is about making money for still others it is about being famous. I believe you have had a successful career if you have a respectable reputation in your industry and you have no regrets looking back.
Life will always give you opportunities to succeed. What matters is that are you equipped with knowledge and expertise to take advantage of that opportunity.

Q. 11. What are the biggest turnoffs in an interview of a job applicant?

Mr. Faisal Bhatti:

1) Low on energy
2) Being shabbily dress up
3) Not knowing what they want to do in life
4) Ideas or statements that they cannot back up with logic

Q. 12. Due to rough economic situation and soaring price rise, how does your company deal with keeping itself cost effective and attractive for job seekers?

Mr. Faisal Bhatti: I read it somewhere that 90% of your time should be focused on new opportunities and the remaining 10% on fixing the issues. From my 7-8 years professional experience, I have gained that you can’t achieve much by cost effective techniques, you only lose quality people by tightening the screws. No matter how bad the economy is, there is always something new that you can try or do to keep up the corporate growth.
You should have practical and rational policies in place all the time to maintain check & balance and this has nothing to do with how the economy is doing.

Q. 13. Any good advice you want to give for the job seekers who want to enter and prosper in the professional field?

Mr. Faisal Bhatti: Do a lot of research before you pick a career and once you have done that, stay honest to it. There are no shortcuts and there is no alternative to hard work.
